My knowledge about the Northwest of America was less than basic. I had some names in my head, some images that came with the names. Jimmy Hendrix, Nirvana, Grunge, nothing to compose anything coherent. But if you look at the names that are connected with this region you get the feeeling that there must be something special. Boeing, Microsoft, Amazon, Starbucks, and don’t forget the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a most impressive gathering of big names. And each name worth a story.
We went downtown Seattle to the park surrounding the Space Needle, that’s hiw they call their TV tower with a visitor platform. We chose a Starbucks near the needle and had little apple tarts with the coffee. “Do you mind which coffee”, the “barista” – they really call the machine operators like that – asked me. “No, I don’t mind”, I said, thinking I would not taste the difference anyway and as long as it’s coffee I’m fine, and thanks for asking but please no latte, no café au lait, no lait at all if you don’t mind. If I want lait I order a milkshake, but I never do.
